The People Behind Your Furniture Recycling

Ida Gorecka • September 4, 2024

We know that putting a face to a name can make all the difference, so we’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible team making it all happen. These are the people working tirelessly to support you.

New Recycling Leadership

Gavin is now our Recycling Manager and will be leading our recycling efforts. He works closely with the team every day to break down office furniture into core materials, which are then processed, separated, and sent off-site to manufacturers or reintroduced into the economy. Partners can bring used office furniture to our site, where, for a small fee, it is fully dismantled. Usable metals, plastics, foam, wood, and other materials are carefully sorted, processed, and returned in collaboration with various material specialists. Gavin is on a mission to increase the range of materials we recycle, including electrical goods and any residual waste from our daily operations. He will also be driving the development of new technologies, machinery, and facilities that could one day make us waste-free. No pressure, Gavin!

Dawn is now our Refurbishment Manager and will oversee all office furniture refurbishment efforts. She plays a key role in recycling by identifying office furniture that can have a second life, replacing fabrics and materials, and making these items available to partners who can find them a new home. Partners can bring second-hand furniture to our site for a small fee, where we assess and refurbish pieces that can be returned to office spaces. In some cases, we can even visit sites to collect and repair furniture, restoring it to a standard that’s often almost as good as new. Dawn is on a mission to equip the team with the knowledge and skills needed to refurbish office furniture to an even higher standard, using a wider range of materials and styling options.

The recycling operation is supported by Will and an office team, who will be communicating and liaising with partners. They will be in regular contact as we assist with project plans and provide as much support as possible. We understand firsthand how demanding some projects and clients can be, and Will will help share that burden with many of you.

The Backbone of Coggin SOS

Behind the scenes is a dedicated team of recyclers and refurbishers: Kai, Macauley, Mac, John, and Dan. They handle your office furniture and prepare your jobs each week.

John and Mac are our resident recyclers, committed to breaking down and recycling furniture. They also put significant effort into processing materials and returning them.

Kai, Ollie, Macauley, and Dan make up our refurbishment team. They restore much of our seating and desks, with Dan and Ollie spending the most time in the workshops. Kai and Macauley frequently visit partner sites to assist with on-site fittings, turning visions—and sometimes even dreams—into reality for business owners.

Leadership with a Purpose

Leading our mission are Sam and Dan. Sam, who has been with the brand from the beginning, will support partners in planning some of the largest projects nationwide. He will also work with our team to enhance our facilities, train staff, and develop innovative recycling methods. Dan, with his extensive experience working with over 25 organizations, will help lead our office team. He will assist Coggin in planning and executing numerous recycling sites across the UK.

Our approach to furnishing workspaces is changing as part of a collective effort to reverse the projected 70% increase in global waste by 2050 . Design trends are constantly changing, and as companies race to keep up it can be challenging to keep up with the newest trends in office furniture. However, this constant cycle results in millions of office furniture pieces getting unnecessarily discarded every year when, with the right expertise, they could be repurposed, reused, or recycled. What can we do to reverse this trend? Facility Managers must help to embed circular economy thought processes into procurement and disposal strategies, across the entire supply chain. While recycling paper and reducing energy consumption are common strategies, one area that is often overlooked as a source of sustainable credentials is office furniture. By embracing furniture recycling and refurbishment , facility managers can make smarter , more sustainable choices that help reduce waste, cut costs, and ensure premium-quality office designs, often without the lengthy lead times that accompany new furniture purchases. If you haven’t considered refurbished furniture before, you are in the right place to discover why they should be your obvious choice for your next project. But even if you have considered it, keep reading for valuable insights into how refurbished furniture can improve sustainability initiatives, maximise cost savings, and support long-term business goals.
